Summary
The authors refer about 65 cataract operations performed at 58 children (up to 18 years). Traumatic cataracts (35) were the most frequent; 31 boys and 1 girl. Inborn cataracts were in 21 eyes and complicated cataracts were in 9 eyes.
Visual acuity 20/40 and better was achieved in 40% of eyes where it was possible to assess it. Visual acuity 20/40 and better was achieved in 50% of 22 eyes with IOL implantation. The joungest child was 4 years old. Contact lenses were regularly used for 12 eyes and visual acuity 20/40 and better was in 75% of them. The worst results were in children with inborn cataract — only one eye from 10 where it was possible to assess it achieved visual acuity 20/40. In one case exchange of luxated IOL was necessary.
The IOL implantation in children will be performed in more cases, especially in traumatic cataracts.
