Abstract

The exploration of the lithosphere is expanding rapidly from the investigation of structure to that of physical properties and state, composition, and processes related to the transport of matter and energy on macro- and micro-scales. Among the key projects defined by the International Lithosphere Program, some are especially related to this subject of mobility.

Address during the Opening Plenary Session of the International Seminar on Super-Deep Continental Drilling and Deep Geophysical Research, Yaroslawl/USSR, August 23–29, 1988
