Abstract
Biologically, calcium is perhaps one of the most important elements. It plays a crucial role in the development of mammals’ structure; its importance for the strength of tooth and bone has long been realised. It also plays a very important role in every day essential functions like muscle contraction. In spite of its importance, the physical and chemical structure of calcium in biological and even inorganic systems has remained uncertain. This is partly due to the fact that the calcium ion, Ca2+, having the electronic configuration of a rare gas atom, Ar, is not accessible via other spectroscopic techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR); and also that, due to the ‘amorphous’ nature of the calcium complexes in biological systems, x-ray diffraction technique is of not much help. Over the last four years x-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) has been used to probe the structure and chemical nature of calcium in a number of biologically interesting systems. Some of these studies are reviewed here.
