Abstract

The zirconium phosphates are the most intensively studied members of a vast class of layer-structured inorganic ion-exchangers with potential end-uses ranging from catalysis to ion transport [I]. Our interest lies in monitoring changes in site availability to transition metal ions after exchange, dehydration, and other treatments, with reference to catalytic applications. An extensive series of materials with first-row transition metal ions is under investigation. For high-loaded (20–100%) materials containing Co(2+) or Ni(2+), there is electronic spectral evidence for coordination number changes as the materials are dehydrated (c.n. 6→4) and the layers subsequently destroyed (c.n. 4→5) [2].
