Abstract

The III–VI layer compounds GaS, GaSe, and InSe crystallize into stacked hexagonal layers, each consisting of four close-packed monatomic sheets in the sequence anion-cation-cation-anion. The crystallographic structure of a single layer is the same for all compounds but, due to the weakness of interlayer bonds, several polytypes have been observed, corresponding to different stacking sequences of the layers (1).
