Part of the book series: Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie / Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((532,volume 15))

Abstract

The ability of vascular plants to replace organs or parts of organs lost through injury, pests, diseases, and natural death of the organ has long excited interest and has also been utilized by horticulturists for the propagation of economic species for many centuries. However, the information which this property of plants can provide on the physiology of growth has often been obscured by a lack of exact definition of the process under investigation.

The following abbreviations are used throughout this review: IAA = 3-indoleacetic acid (ß-indolylacetic acid); IBA = 3-indolebutyric acid; NAA = 1-naphthaleneacetic acid.
