Abstract
The majority of experimental embryologists have long hesitated to admit that genes play an important part in primary morphogenesis (gastrulation, cleavage or segmentation, organ initiation); they readily conceded, however, that genes intervene in the ultimate details of differentiation. Such a concept was clearly expressed by A. Brachet (1930) when he proposed to distinguish between general heredity and special heredity: the former, he felt, controls primary morphogenesis and results from the cooperation between nucleus and cytoplasm; the latter corresponds to the classical, mendelian heredity. In the present chapter, we shall consider the “general heredity” of A. Brachet; the specific role of the genes in morphogenesis will be analysed in the following chapter of this volume1.
