Abstract

The lamina ganglionaris or lamina is the outermost ganglion in the visual system of insects (Fig. 2). It lies between the retina distally and the outer or intermediate chiasma proximally. Proximal to the outer chiasma lies the medulla (medulla externa), then the inner chiasma and the lobula (medulla interna). In Hymenoptera there is no lobula plate. The lamina can be divided roughly into a cell body- and a fibre layer (CBL, EPL) (Fig. 3). The CBL consists of a fenestrated zone (FL) and a monopolar cell body layer (MCBL).
