Abstract
In the following chapter, the innovation cluster of the German automotive components sector will be analysed using the framework outlined in Chapter 2. The first section presents the composition of the sector and provides some statistical information about performance and dynamics of the sector and its position in the German economy. The second part will deal with recent developments in the component supplier sector in response to the fundamental changes in the car manufacturing industry in the 1990s. The third and central part will be dedicated to the innovation cluster, its configuration and operational dynamics.

RTOs are either public or semi-public research institutions that are part of the national innovation system. They can perform mainly basic research (as in the case of Max Planck Institutes in Germany, or concentrate more on adoption of technology in industry, like Fraunhofer Institutes (see Abrahamson 1997 and Rickert 1999).
Since the interviews were conducted in 1999, the monetary unit was German Marks or DM.
