Poverty in Hungary — Some Results of the First Two Waves of the Hungarian Household Panel Study in 1992 and 1993

Part of the book series: Contributions to Economics ((CE))

Abstract

Since 1962, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office conducted surveys at 5-year intervals for household incomes. The questionnaires inquired in great detail about total monetary income and the consumption from the household’s small-scale agricultural production (the so-called household plots) for the year. The data given by the household on wage income and on monetary social benefits were confirmed at the place of payment (working place, pension office). The results are considered to be relatively reliable, and only part of the income, that originating from the second economy, are considered to be understated. The samples are very large: 0.5 per cent of the households, or 15–20 thousand households, which includes about 50 thousand persons. The results of these surveys are published in detail. In consequence, reliable and detailed data are available to study income differences by social strata, residence, age, etc. (Andorka, Kolosi, Vukovich, 1992).
