Abstract

The importance of the growth pattern of the modern economies has long been an issue in economic research. The increasing weight of the service sector and the evolution of both services and industries have been the object of specific inquiries by Chenery (1960, 1979), Kuznets (1971), Chenery and Syrquin (1975), Baumol (1967) and Baumol et al. (1985). Earlier theories of development through progressive increases of the secondary over the primary sector and the tertiary over the secondary are due to Clark (1940) and Rostow (1960).
