Abstract
A subject of my interest has, for several years, been physical education as a school subject and as a part of secondary education in Finland. It is my plan to follow the vicissitudes of physical education from the early years to near the present, i. e. to 1970. At that time, a change in the Finnish school system occurred which discontinued the type of school I have been investigating: the comprehensive school system was adopted. As the result of 3 years’ work, I have completed the investigation of the first 75 years (1843–1917) of physical education as a school subject (Koivusalo 1982). I will return to this shortly.
