Abstract
The history of international sporting co-operation goes back some 100 years. Throughout this era there has been some discussion on the relation between sport, peace on earth and the mutual understanding between peoples. This relation was analysed by Baron de Coubertin and in recent decades it has been discussed at several conferences. In contrast to the widely shared general interest in this theme, very few scientific studies have been carried out on the overall development of international sport. This can be said to be true of both the theoretical and the empirical approach to the subject. The backwardness of the political science of sport may partly explain this state of affairs (Güldenpfennig and Schulke 1980). This article includes a review of the structure of international sport and summarises the results of the study carried out by the Tampere Peace Research Institute.
