Abstract
Ever since the ancient Olympic Games with their truce for participants, coaches and spectators, the Olympic Games have been considered a symbol of peace. The longing for peace is written into the Olympic charter. On the other hand, physical education and sport in classical Greece were performed to prepare able soldiers; in more recent times, the victory of the British over Napoleon was supposed to have been prepared on the playing fields of Eton and de Coubertin recognised “war” as the root of German gymnastics, an Olympic sport from the very beginning (de Coubertin 1894).
