The significance of hyperaldosteronuria in hypertension

  • Chapter
Essential Hypertension

Abstract

In 1913, Vaquez referred three hypertensive patients to Delbet for adrenalectomy, which the patients failed to survive. At that time, the aim of adrenalectomy was primarily medullectomy. Vaquez had in fact just previously emphasised the atherogenic, in addition to the hypertensive, role of adrenaline. Later, between 1925 and 1930 and as a result of the work of René Leriche, adrenalectomy came into its own again at the same time as neurosurgical interventions on the sympathetic system and greater splanchnic nerve were beginning to be performed. However, in those days adrenalectomy was still only unilateral and its effectiveness doubtful.
