Zusammenfassung
Viele fakultative Anaerobier können nur dann unter anaeroben Bedingungen wachsen, wenn Nitrat in der Nährlösung enthalten ist. Das Nitrat tritt an die Stelle des Sauerstoffes als Elektronenacceptor in der Atmungskette und ermöglicht unter anaeroben Bedingungen eine regelrechte Atmung (Nitratatmung, dissimilatorische Nitratreduktion) und einen oxidativen Stoffwechsel. Die angebotenen Substrate werden dabei, wie bei der Sauerstoffatmung, vollständig zu Kohlendioxid und Wasser oxidiert.
