A small focus is found in Southern Portugal and a similar one in Maharashtra State in India. Schistosoma mansoni is distributed in many areas in Africa, in some countries of the Middle East, in some of the Caribbean Islands and in Venezuela, Surinam and Brazil. Schistosoma japonicum is endemic in Japan, China, the Philippines, Celebes and Thailand. The parasite occurs in lower animals in Formosa but human infections have not been reported.
