Abstract
In 1953, Vogel and Minning [50] published their well-documented study of acquired resistance to S. japonicum in Macaca mulatta, following long-term infection. Since then, immunity has been produced in macaques with the cattle adapted Taiwan strain of S. japonicum [7, 34], and with gamma-radiated cercariae of the human-pathogenic strains of S. japonicum and S. mansoni [6, 33]. Recent results indicate that a high degree of resistance can be attained by repeated infection of macaques with “attenuated” schistosomes, but the applicability of these findings to human vaccination is not clear. The present status of this research has been ably summarized by Sadun [30]. Both practical and biological considerations demand that research be directed toward the underlying mechanisms of schistosome immunity. Progress in this field, however, has been slow.
