Abstract
Pathogenesis is taken to indicate formal genesis of lesions provoked by an etiologic agent and, in the present case, the mechanisms by which Schistosoma mansoni causes lesions. It is evident that the anatomical and clinical forms in which the disease presents itself will depend upon these mechanisms. It is also clear that the mechanisms will be multiple and will vary qualitatively, quantitatively, and chronologically through the influence of various factors. Nonetheless, nearly all classifications of schistosomiasis limit themselves to grouping the clinical or anatomo-clinical forms in which the disease can be seen on the basis of symptomatology, parasitologic criteria (phase of invasion, maturation and post-maturation) or static anatomic lesions already fully developed and characterized. Such classifications do not consider the mechanisms by which the etiologic agent provokes the lesion.
