Résumé
La biochimie du corps thyroïde a présenté une succession d’étapes, dont celle portant sur les vingt dernières années a été marquée par l’emploi, à une échelle de plus en plus large, des isotopes radioactifs de l’iode stable (I127). Son développement, amorcé dès 1895, par la découverte, due à Baumann (1895), de l’accumulation de l’iode dans la glande à un taux relativement élevé, a recu une première impulsion après l’isolement, par Kendall (1915), d’une hormone iodée, la L-thyroxine, corps dont la structure a été établie par Harington (1926). Dès 1938 Herz, Roberts et Evans (1938), puis Hamilton et Soley, (1939), ont réalisé les premiers essais d’exploration de la fonction du corps thyroïde au moyen d’iodures radioactifs et ouvert ainsi une ère nouvelle dans la biochimie de cet organe. Seules les difficultés de la production à une large échelle de l’isotope radioactif de l’iode le plus employé aujourd’hui (I131, demi-période : huit jours) ont retardé le premier essor des recherches. Celui-ci est devenu considérable depuis plus de dix ans, en raison des possibilités analytiques très étendues que comportent la Chromatographie et l’électrophorèse des corps marqués par I131.
