The antihypertensive actions of mercurial, thiazide, and spirolactone diuretics

Abstract

A number of diuretic agents such as chlorothiazide, hydrochlorothiazide and the organic mercurials have been shown to be useful not only in congestive heart failure but also in arterial hypertension (1–11).The exact manner in which these agents lower blood pressure has not been clearly established. Studies in our laboratory have indicated that the antihypertensive effect of these agents is not due solely to a loss of body sodium (4, 8, 10, 11).The metabolic studies which support such a conclusion are reviewed in the present report. In addition the antihypertensive actions of a new group of diuretic compounds, the steroidal lactones, are described.
