Zusammenfassung
Während die Forschung früherer Zeiten sich ausschließlich auf den Temperatursinn als den Vermittler von Bewußtseinsinhalten beschränkte, hat man in neuerer Zeit mehr und mehr erkannt, daß den Sinnesorganen der Temperaturempfindung, den Thermoreceptoren, auch eine andere, biologisch vielleicht noch weit bedeutungsvollere Funktion zukommt: die Vermittlung sensibler Impulse für die Temperaturregulation des Organismus. Beide Aspekte sollen durch den Ausdruck „Thermoreception“ zusammengefaßt werden. Diese Doppelstellung der Thermoreceptoren als den Elementen bewußter, „in den Sinn“ gehender und unbewußter, vegetativer Tätigkeit, macht die Erforschung ihrer Funktion zu einem Problem, dem sich das Interesse der Forscher erfreulicherweise in steigendem Maße zuwendet. Und doch gibt es nur wenige Zweige der Physiologie, in denen bis in die neueste Zeit die Unklarheit so groß war, wie auf diesem Gebiet. Ungeachtet einer großen Zahl neuer und wertvoller Einzelbefunde, vor allem auf dem Gebiete der Thermoregulation, ist es gerade die alte Grundfrage nach der Funktionsweise der Thermoreceptoren, die erst in den letzten Jahren in wesentlichen Punkten befriedigend gelöst werden konnte.
