Some remarks on the stability of extensional flows

  • Conference paper
Progress and Trends in Rheology II

Abstract

Significant work on the breakdown of steady or uniform extensional flow is discussed. Potential sources of confusion in the use of terms such as spinnability and necking are highlighted. The emphasis is on theoretical work and in particular on draw resonance but experimentally observed phenomena are reviewed. The important contribution of nonlinear analysis and carefully chosen computation is shown both for draw resonance and for surface tension driven breakup of elasticoviscous filaments.
