Summary
Thirty-eight lumbar disc levels were re-explored following CT in patients with a failed back surgery syndrome. Comparison of the noncontrast CT (NCCT) and contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) with the operative findings showed that in the majority of cases, NCCT was sufficient for diagnosis. CECT was useful in confirming the extent of epidural fibrosis. A major source of error using both techniques was the presence of undetected disc fragments embedded in scar tissue.
