Summary
Gadolinium Gd enhancement within the internal auditory canal (IAC) can occur in meningiomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). In three surgically confirmed cases this enhancement was found to reflect tumour extension into the IAC. The pattern of IAC Gd enhancement was compared with 42 acoustic neuromas (in 38 patients). The most reliable differential diagnostic criteria on MRI in separating CPA meningiomas from acoustic neuromas include the peritumoral dural enhancement, the presence of calcifications, the broad base of attachment to the petrous bone and the lesser Tl increment after Gd injection in meningiomas.
