Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 47))

Abstract

Mycobacteria possess several important biological properties, particularly an adjuvant effect in antibody formation (Freund’s adjuvant effect; [4]) and induction in rats of experimental arthritis, termed adjuvant arthritis [14]. These reactions can also be provoked [15, 16]:

  1. a)

    by cell walls from human and non-human mycobacterial strains;

  2. b)

    by wax D fractions with a nitrogen-containing moiety (peptidoglycolipids).
