Current and Future Activities in the Field of Communication Satellites in Europe

Abstract

Activities in the field of communications satellites started at ESA in the early 1970s after a decision was taken by the Member States of the organisation (then called ESRO) to expand the scope of the programmes to include both scientific and applications missions. The first project was the development of OTS, an experimental and preoperational satellite for communications in the frequency bands of 14/11 GHz. As the precursor of the future ECS satellites, OTS was launched in May 1978 and has since been used continu ously by PTT administrations and many other experimenters /1/. Its useful lifetime is expected to be in excess of five years.

Zusammenfassung

Die ESA ist seit Anfang der siebziger Jahre auf dem Gebiet der Nachrichtensatelliten tätig. Das erste Projekt war die Entwicklung von OTS, eines experimentellen und präoperationellen Satelliten im 14/11 GHz-Bereich als Vorläufer der zukünftigen europäischen ECS-Satelliten. Der OTS-Satellit wurde im Mai 1978 gestartet und wird seitdem von den Postverwaltungen und vielen anderen experimentell genutzt. Der ECS-Satellit, der eine Weiterentwicklung von OTS darstellt, wird im Raumsegment des EUTELSAT-Netzes sein, das innerhalb von Europa zum Weitverkehrstelefonverkehr und zum Fernsehprogrammaustausch der Eurovision genutzt werden soll. Die ersten beiden Satelliten werden 1982 gestartet werden. Andere Weiterentwicklungen von OTS sind die MARECSSatelliten, welche die INMARSAT-Organisation zur weltweiten Kommunikation mit Schiffen ab 1982 benützen will.
