Abstract
By means of satellite communication techniques an unlimited number of subscribers, distributed over a large area, can be supplied with television programs or equivalent signals. This can be achieved by concentrating the output power of special high power satellites on single countries. This results in a high power flux density which enables the use of simple, low-cost receiving equipment. Fig. 1 shows a geostationary broadcasting satellite covering the area of the Federal Republic of Germany. For European countries such as Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy, transmit powers in the order of 250 and 350 W have to be supplied (fig. 2). Broadcasting satellites with downlink frequencies in the 12-GHz-range have been studied and developed in Germany since the early seventies.
