Zusammenfassung
Shockwave besteht aus einer Serie von Tools und Plug-ins, die für das jeweilige Authoring-Tool Director, Flash, FreeHand, Authorware, xRes, sowie Audiodateien im WAV-, AIFF-oder PCM-Format zwei Funktionen ausführt:

■ Mit dem spezifischen Kompressionsverfahren werden Quelldateien komprimiert und in das jeweilige Shockwave-Format konvertiert.

■ Die „Shockwave-Plug-Ins“ermöglichen es Microsoft Internet Explorer und Netscape Navigator, Director-Filme im DCR-, DXR- und DIR-Format, Flash-Dateien im SWF-Format, Audio im SWA- und Authorware im AAS-Format aus dem WWW herunterzuladen und abzuspielen. Es gibt jeweils Shockwave-Browser-Plug-Ins für Director, Flash, Authorware und Audiodateien.
