Abstract

The subject of economic co-ordination and inter-firm relationships, ignored for a long time, has recently begun to be considered as an object of reflection and research (Baudry, 1995). Indeed, it exceeds both the contexts of market and internal organisational co-ordination, described by Robertson (1932) as “islands of conscious power in this ocean of unconscious cooperation like lumps of butter coagulating in a pail of buttermilk”. The present discussion is not confined to the nature and limits of firms, but attempts to understand the existence of cooperative organisational forms as alternatives to price determination based on simple market mechanisms. We are at present witnesses to the evolution of a more complex approach which includes other forms of co-ordination. Richardson (1972), making use of the image of firms as “islands of planned co-ordination in a sea of market relations”, calls attention to the whole set of cooperative inter-firm relationships which are neither market- nor integration-based.
