Abstract

Surgical procedures involving extensive resection of liver for primary and metastatic cancers of this vital organ have long been neglected, although it has been demonstrated that such surgery is highly successful in selected patients. Only with increasing knowledge of the functions and regenerative capacity of the liver, the surgical anatomy of the intrinsic and extrinsic hepatic circulatory systems, and the techniques of hemostasis on which successful operative intervention depends have surgeons been willing to perform major hepatectomy.
