Zusammenfassung
Die Erkenntnis, daß Zellen die Grundeinheit des Lebendigen verkörpern, basiert ursprünglich auf lichtmikroskopischen Beobachtungen. Verfeinerung der Schnittechnik und Verbesserung des Auflösungsvermögens ermöglichen heute dank der Elektronenoptik Untersuchungen bis in den molekularen Bereich der Zellstruktur. Die Entdeckung immer kleinerer Zellbestandteile und ihre genaue Beschreibung kennzeichnen die Weiterentwicklung der Histologie. Die heute vereinfacht anmutende Unterteilung in Zellkern, Zellmembran und Hyalo- oder Cytoplasma wurde ergänzt durch Untersuchungen über die Kernmembran, die Chromosomen und die DNS-Stränge. Das Hyaloplasma erwies sich durchaus nicht als homogen. 1890 entdeckte Altmann im „Hyaloplasma“ „Elementargranula oder Bioblasten“. Es setzte sich die Bezeichnung „Mitochondrien“ durch. Wir wissen heute, daß auch die Mitochondrien eine geordnete, innere Struktur besitzen. Die Entdeckung des endoplasmatischen Reticulums und der „Paladeschen Granula“ (50–200 Å), die wir als Ribosomen bezeichnen, blieb elektronenmikroskopischen Untersuchungen vorbehalten. Das Modell einer Zelle, welches nach dem heutigen Stand der morphologischen Forschung konstruiert ist, wirkt kompliziert. Es sind jedoch nur drei Grundelemente, die in älteren und neueren Arbeiten beschrieben werden: Membranen, Granula und Fäden.
