Abstract

The siphonous marine Chlorophyta are comprised of the orders Dasycladales and Bryopsidales. Convincing information on the behaviour of the nuclei during the complete life cycle in the Dasycladales exists so far only for Acetabularia Lamouroux (for literature see Bonotto, 1988). The relatively long diplophase, starting with zygote formation, is followed by a heterokaryon beginning after the meiosis of the primary nucleus. Secondary nuclei undergo unsynchronous mitotic divisions before cyst formation. The latter starts with a single nucleus dividing mitotically within the young cyst. Therefore, the cysts are homokaryotic and release male or female gametes. Nuclear behaviour in Batophora J. Agardh (Liddle et al., 1976) is probably similar to that in Acetabularia, but information on the ploidy levels of the nuclei is still lacking for Batophora.
