Abstract
The new tool of recombinant DNA and cloning eukaryotic DNA fragments in bacteria determines the direction of molecular biology. Characterization of cloned fragments by restriction mapping, hybridization and sequencing on a molecular basis has become the equivalent of gene mapping by complementation group analysis in classic genetics. The finding, however, that genes were interrupted by noncoding inserts was a striking result and raised questions concerning their function and evolution which till now are beyond reasonable response. Molecular plant genetics developed their own field due to the special features of plant genomes and the occurrence of natural gene manipulation discovered recently.
