Dynamics of Reactions Involving Vibrationally Excited Molecules

Abstract

This chapter deals with the role that vibrational energy states of reactants or products play in determining the dynamics of elementary chemical reactions. When the original bonds are broken and new ones are formed, the continuum in the vibrational ladder of the reactant molecule has to be reached: any means of introducing energy into molecules (whether through light or collisions) has eventually to act upon specific vibrational modes. It is the breaking of these modes that eventually leads to reaction.
