Specificity in Regeneration of Optic and Olfactory Pathways in Teleost Fish

Abstract

The remarkable regenerative capacity of various parts of the teleost central nervous system has been clearly demonstrated in numerous investigations (Koppanyi 1955; Kirsche and Kirsche 1961) and several of these have strikingly illustrated the apparent high degree of specificity which may be achieved by regenerating fibres in making central reconnexions (Attardi and Sperry 1963; Westerman and Arora 1965). Even some innate (Segaar and Niewenhuys 1963) and learned (Arora and Sperry 1963) behaviour has been shown to return after such central regeneration.
