Control of the Neurones of the Supraoptic and Paraventricular Nuclei

Abstract

There has been much interest of recent years in hypothalamico-hypophyseal functional relationships and in the production and action of neurosecretions. Numerous reviews have appeared (Harris 1955; Sawyer 1961; Brooks, Gilbert, Levey and Curtis 1962; Scharrer and Scharrer 1963; Rothballer 1963). It has been demonstrated beyond question that the supraoptic nucleus participates in the production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and in the control of its output. Cells of the nucleus appear to be osmosensitive (Jewell and Verney 1957; Cross and Green 1959) and the output of ADH is cholinergically mediated (Pickford and Watt 1951).
