Abstract
There appear to be few more hazardous occupations for the structural geologist than to attempt classification of the common minor structures of deformed rocks.* The main difficulty in arriving at a useful classification seems to be the lack of a clear-cut basis on which to classify. The relationships between even the common types of structure are poorly understood, and a purely descriptive basis of the kind favored by most geologists generally results in the separation into different classes of structures of very similar origin because of differences in appearance from place to place. Likewise, a purely genetic basis fails because we do not know how most structures are formed.
