Abstract
The earth scientist is concerned with physical and chemical phenomena occurring in bodies which vary greatly in size. The interests of a single geologist, for example, can range from the chemical interactions between microscopic mineral grains in a rock to the differential motions of lithospheric plates or other large tectonic units of the crust, hundreds or thousands of kilometers in extent. He can be concerned, in fact, with attempting to establish a relationship between phenomena of such disparate sizes.
