The Cortical Influence on the Autonomic Nervous System

  • Chapter
Experimentelle Physiologie

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Neurologie ((BUMKE NEUROLOG.,volume 2))

Abstract

The autonomic nervous system is usually considered as an arrangement of ganglia and fibres entirely outside the central nervous system which controls the involuntary reactions of the body. This system is connected with the segmental nervous system by preganglionic fibres by means of which segmental reflex regulation of peripheral autonomic activity is exerted. Furthermore, investigations have made it clear that a control of primary importance for autonomic function is exerted from the supra-segmental levels, in particular from the region of the hypothalamus.
