Hereditary Aspects of Some Less Frequently Occurring Malignancies Exclusive of The Reticuloendothelial System

  • Chapter
Hereditary Factors in Carcinoma

Abstract

The title of this chapter with its emphasis upon “infrequently occurring malignancies” could be misleading depending upon the racial and geographic areas in which the reader resides. For example, Kaposi’s sarcoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma are exceedingly rare malignancies in the United States. On the other hand, Kaposi’s sarcoma is prevalent among the Bantu of South Africa, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs frequently among the Chinese in mainland China and Formosa, and in inhabitants of Malaysia. Finally, another lesion to be discussed, carotid body tumors, so far as can be determined are rare in all geographic areas and in all racial and ethnic groups. Therefore, in keeping with our emphasis upon hereditary and environmental interactions in the etiology of human malignancies, the incidence of malignancy in the particular geographic cultural, and racial setting must be constantly evaluated.
