An Evolutionary Perspective

Abstract

This paper argues that the nature of a firm’s external knowledge acquisition activities will vary depending upon the evolutionary stage of an industry. During periods of incremental innovation informal exchange relationships are more appropriate; stability facilitates communication and long-term relationships. In contrast, during eras of ferment informal relationships are less effective given both a lack of absorptive capacity and uncertainty regarding the ability of firms to make future contributions. Formal alliances or even acquisitions provide a more effective window on emerging technologies. Finally, this paper proposes that there is path dependency in the development of external acquisition capabilities. Firms must look outside their boundaries during periods of incremental change in order to do so effectively during periods of ferment.
