Abstract
Innovations are projects, but not all projects are innovations. This is why the traditional project management with its formal and procedural tools does not succeed in innovations. Much more important are enthusiastic and well cooperating promotors (sponsors, champions, experts). Thus, at first glance an antagonism seems to exist between the projectmanagement-model and the promotor-model of innovation management. Actually, this antagonism can be reduced, if some situational variables are regarded: The promotormodel is the management option of early phases, of problems of high innovativeness and complexity and in situations with unclear goals. The more the innovative process proceeds the more important are the formal and procedural instruments of project management.
