Part of the book series: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis / Moderne Methoden der Pflanzenanalyse ((PFLANZENANAL.,volume 7))

Abstract

The enzymes concerned with the synthesis and degradation of amides, peptides, and proteins are of considerable interest because of the importance of their substrates in cellular functions. The study of these enzymes has sometimes been hampered by their instability and by difficulties in the assay of their activities, but recent improvements in methodology have greatly aided their study. The enzymes may be divided conveniently into two classes: (a) enzymes catalyzing the synthesis of amides, peptides, or proteins (synthetases); and (b) enzymes catalyzing the degradation of amides, peptides or proteins (amidases, peptidases, and proteases).
