The Harmine Group of Alkaloids

  • Chapter

Zusammenfassung

Harmine and harmaline are alkaloids found in the seeds of Peganum harmala and the pharmacological actions of these alkaloids, as well as of many artifically prepared derivatives of them, have now been investigated in considerable detail. The seeds of the plant have been used therapeutically for centuries and a brief reference to this earlier history may be of some value, as several of the characteristic actions of the alkaloids were empirically discovered from this early use of the seeds in man.
