Zusammenfassung

Seit Beginn der Diabetesforschung fehlte es nicht an Versuchen, das weite Gebiet dieses Krankheitsbildes durch eine sinnvolle Unterteilung und Gliederung überschaubarer zu machen. Zur Klassifizierung bieten sich besonders zwei Gesichtspunkte, denen in diesem Kapitel gefolgt wird, an: 1. die Einteilung der Zuckerkrankheit nach ihrer Ätiologie und 2. ihre Betrachtung nach Stadien und klinischem Verlauf. Hier hat gerade die Erforschung der Diabetesvor- und -frühstadien in den letzten Jahren neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen, die für präventive Behandlungsversuche von Bedeutung sind. So resultiert die Prognose des Leidens, der der letzte Abschnitt des Kapitels gewidmet ist, aus den Modifikationen der schicksalhaft gegebenen Krankheitsbasis durch die Bemühungen des Kranken und seines Arztes, ungünstige exogene Einflüsse wie Übergewicht, Diätfehler, unzureichende Einstellung auszuschalten oder auf das unvermeidbare Maß zu beschränken.
