Abstract
The data obtained in the previous chapters indicate that the major mechanism of hippocampal LTP is an increase in the efficacy of excitatory synaptic connections. The aim of the following series of experiments is an attempt to perform a more detailed analysis of mechanisms which underlie these changes in synaptic efficacy. To analyze these mechanisms in more detail, it is convenient to use the terminology of the quantum hypothesis of synaptic transmission [260, 261, 262, 485]. This hypothesis and its application to central synapses will be considered in Chapter 7. Here, we shall use only the simplest equations of this hypothesis.
