Abstract
The toxic effects of ethanol injected into neoplastic lesions had been assessed in animals and on operative specimens from man. Alcohol enters the cell by diffusion and produces immediate coagulation necrosis followed by the formation of granulation tissue and fibrosis and by partial or complete thrombosis of small vessels. The phenomena are the outcome of cellular dehydration and protein denaturation. We used Percutaneous Ethanol Injection (PEI) under US guidance in the treatment of patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhosis [1–3,6], hepatic metastases [4] and autonomous thyroid adenoma [5]. US is essential because permit the recognition of the target, the correct centering of the needle into the selected area of the lesion and the control of the appropriate quantity of alcohol to inject.
