Ziel des CAD-Einsatzes ist es, ein vollständiges rechnerinternes Modell, nämlich das Objekt-Modell der zu entwickelnden Teile, Baugruppen oder Erzeugnisse, zu gewinnen. Das Objektmodell wird auch als Produktmodell bezeichnet. Aus ihm werden dann alle Informationen für den nachgeschalteten Produktionsprozep gewonnen oder verträglich hinzugefügt.
