  • Conference paper
Book cover Nonlinear Optics: Materials and Devices

Part of the book series: Springer Proceedings in Physics ((SPPHY,volume 7))

Abstract

This lecture will deal with the experimental investigation of electron-hole dynamics in semiconductors by means of picosecond luminescence spectroscopy. The basic experimental techniques will be described briefly. We then shall present picosecond luminescence measurements to investigate the energy relaxation of photoexcited electrons and holes in GaAs and CdS,and the effects of free carrier screening, nonequi1ibrium phonons and localization of electronic states will be discussed. The second topic will deal with the dynamics of excitons, exciton molecules and the electron-hole plasma in CdS. Finally, some recent results of picosecond luminescence studies of the carrier dynamics in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well structures will be presented.
